Complete breast reduction recovery timeline
1 to 3 days after surgery
In the first few days following your breast reduction, rest is critical, but so is gentle movement. You’ll likely feel sore, tight, and tired. You’ll be prescribed pain medication, and swelling or bruising is common. You’ll wear a surgical bra to support healing, and you may need help moving around or preparing meals. Showering may be allowed after 48 to 72 hours, but you should avoid getting your incision sites wet until you’re cleared.
1 to 2 weeks after surgery
Expect tightness, swelling, and tenderness, particularly during the first week. Many patients compare the sensation to milk let-down during breastfeeding. You should avoid driving and limit physical activity, but you’ll likely feel comfortable walking and doing light tasks. By the end of the second week, most patients feel significantly better and begin to resume non-strenuous routines. You may need 10 to 14 days off work, depending on your job.
3 to 4 weeks after surgery
At this point, much of the initial swelling will have gone down, and your breasts will begin to settle into their new shape. You may resume most non-strenuous daily activities. Any residual tenderness should be minimal. You’ll still wear a supportive bra without underwire, and you should continue to avoid high-impact exercise or heavy lifting.
4 to 6 weeks after surgery
By week four, you’ll likely feel more like yourself again. You may be cleared to resume full physical activity, including upper body workouts. Swelling may continue to decrease over the next several weeks, and your surgical incisions will continue to heal. You can transition into regular bras (without underwires) at this stage, depending on your healing.
6 weeks to 3 months after surgery
At this stage, you’ll likely feel fully back to normal in your day-to-day life. Most patients are cleared to return to high-impact exercise, including weightlifting and cardio, as long as they wear a supportive sports bra. Swelling continues to improve, and your breast shape starts to stabilize. If recommended, you may start using scar care treatments such as silicone gels or sheets.
3 to 6 months after surgery
The majority of swelling has resolved, and your breasts will feel more natural. Your scars will continue to flatten as the tissue remodels underneath the skin. At this point, many patients start to enjoy the full functional and aesthetic benefits of their breast reduction, such as improved mobility, easier exercise, better clothing fit, and relief from pain or posture issues.
6 months to 1 year after surgery
Full healing is usually achieved by the 12-month mark. Your breast size and shape should now be stable, and your final results visible. Scars will continue to mature, lightening in color and becoming less noticeable over time. Annual follow-ups with Dr. Lalezar are recommended to ensure your long-term results remain beautiful and stable.
